we're still in shock in connecticut. all of us who know this little town, as america has come to know it, 27-28,000 people. beautiful town. hard-working people who worked their way to get there. tight families. very religious. very much involved in the life of the community. peaceful. and out of nowhere -- this tragically is the point in the morning comes this one deranged individual with guns and slaughters 26 innocents, break our hearts, with 20 of those being young children. i'm sure everybody now feels as if they are part of the family of those who were killed. you look at the faces of those children, pure, innocent, and i think of the words that one of the clergy at the interfaith service the other night. they're angels and they're really with the angels in heaven now. the work, the response of the first responders, and the trauma that they have gone through to face what they had to face, and the carnage that they witnessed the, and yet you talk to some of them and they're guilty that they didn't get there earlier a

i know it is true of connecticut. it really was my honor to serve for 24 years with dan inouye here. he was exactly the opposite of all the caricature pictures that people have a congress today. particularly about partisanship and personal on civility. dan inouye is a great gentleman. the most civil of people, the most kind and decent people. and the senator reid said, a proud democrat, a faithful democrat. but not at all partisan. the relationship that he had with the late ted stevens on the appropriations committee was historic and actually inspirational. they are so different in background. background temperament particularly. you know, ted stevens was my neighbor and in dear friend. let's say that he had, well, how widespread agreement he was a very emotional person. dan inouye was more calm. but they formed this remarkable friendship based on shared history going back to world war ii. probably a sense of shared destiny in the sense that they were both from the two last states to join the union, not part of the co

just one weekend a sadness has set in with the news of a massacre of innocent children in newtown, connecticut, followed by the loss of our wonderful colleague, senator danny inouye so i will leave this extraordinary institution and experience with a heavy heart for those who have been lost just in the last few days. i do want to thank the people of texas for asking me to represent them in washington. i want to thank the many people who have served on my staff for almost 20 years. i have to say i am touched that both benches on both sides of this room are filled with my staff members who have been so hardworking and so loyal and have produced so much in 20 years for our state and nation, and i thank them. i do want to thank my colleagues and all the people who work here -- senators, but also those who work behind the scenes to make our lives as good as they can be with the hard hours that we all have. those who keep our buildings safe and clean, who work in the libraries, the shops, the cafeterias, and who guide tens of thousands of tourists through our nation's beautiful capitol each year. i
